When you check off all the options and windows messenger still appears in your icon tray the only way I found to stop it is this :Click Start|Run, type in, (or Copy & Paste), this command:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
and press [Enter].
I switched from checking email in my browser thru my internet provider email page to outlook express so I don't have to watch all those annoying adds and ridiculous news whenever I wanted to check my email just to find out that every time I open Outlook express I get windows messenger in my icon tray even after "unchecking" all options .
